Do I have adequate smoke detectors in my home?
A smoke alarm is the easiest step you can take to cut the risk of fire. You should have at least one smoke alarm on each floor of your home.
How good are my electrical devices?
Are any of your electric wires or cables worn or taped? If so, they aren't safe and should be replaced.
Is my upholstered furniture fire-resistant?
If it was made before 1988 then it's probably not fire-resistant, and can catch fire easily. Check the label to be sure.
Is my stovetop clear of flammable objects?
Keep wires, cloths and oven gloves away from the stovetop. Also, don't let grease or other remains build up.
Is my toaster clean and away from curtains?
Has my chimney been swept?
If you have a fireplace, you should have your chimney cleaned at least once a year.
Is my electric blanket damaged?
Fraying, scorch marks, dampness and loose connections are all dangerous. If your blanket shows any signs of damage, replace it. Don't leave your electric blanket turned on all night unless it has thermostatic controls for safe all-night use.
Do I have several easy to use fire extinguishers in my home?
Make sure that all family members know where they are located and how to use them.
